Everything here is exceptional: its location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the poor soils that force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their grapes and terroir, reflected in the top quality and small quantities of their wines. They are aged in barriques made at the estate’s own cooperage, and the outstanding wines command premium prices. The north has a continental climate, with harsh winters and hot summers. The steep slopes on granite-rich soils are planted almost exclusively with Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and white Viognier; the prestigious wine regions of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
