Guigal\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003ePhilippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the poor soils that force the vines to draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their grapes and terroir, resulting in top-quality wines produced in small quantities. The wines are aged in barriques made at the family’s own cooperage, and these outstanding wines command premium prices. It is no surprise, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003ch3\u003eThe Region\u003c\/h3\u003e\u003cp\u003eThe Rhône is hugely important for winegrowing. It encompasses four wine-growing areas that differ greatly in climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area around the Drôme, a tributary in the middle, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate, with harsh winters and hot summers. Almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and white Viognier are grown on steep slopes with granite-rich soils; the more prestigious wine-growing areas, such as Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie, are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils.
