The Region

Ticino is the southernmost canton of Switzerland and, thanks to its climate, which sees the highest summer temperatures in Switzerland, it is excellently suited for viticulture. The Bordeaux grape variety Merlot is cultivated in over 80 percent of the nine districts of Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrisio, Riviera, Vallemaggia, and Mesolcina. Due to the alpine topography, the vineyard areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes with a thin layer of soil over granite bedrock. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the density of quality winemakers and wines higher, leading to the introduction of a system similar to the Italian DOC in 1997. The full-bodied, aromatic red wines, which are also suitable for cellaring, are among the best in Switzerland and reach an international standard.
