The Region

Ticino is the southernmost canton in Switzerland and is perfectly suited for viticulture thanks to its climate, which features the highest summer temperatures in the country. In over 80 percent of the nine districts—Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrisiotto, Riviera, Vallemaggia, and Mesolcina—the Bordeaux grape variety Merlot is cultivated. Due to the alpine topography, the wine-growing areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes with a thin layer of soil over granite bedrock. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the density of quality winemakers and wines higher, which led to the introduction of a system similar to the Italian DOC in 1997. The full-bodied, aromatic, and cellar-worthy red wines are among the best in Switzerland and reach an international standard.
