The region

Ticino is Switzerland's southernmost canton and, thanks to its climate and the highest summer temperatures in the country, is ideally suited to viticulture. The Bordeaux grape Merlot is cultivated in over 80 percent of the nine districts of Bellinzona, Blenio, Leventina, Locarno, Mendrisio, Riviera, Vallemaggia and Mesolcina. Due to the alpine topography, the wine-growing areas are scattered and consist of small plots on mountain slopes, where a thin layer of soil covers a granite subsoil. Nowhere else in Switzerland is the concentration of quality winegrowers and wines higher, which is why a system similar to Italy's DOC was introduced in 1997. The full-bodied, aromatic red wines, which are also suitable for ageing, are among the best in Switzerland and meet international standards.
