About Bodegas Volver

The Bodegas Volver project was founded in 2004 by the visionary Rafael Cañizares, a trained oenologist and winemaker whose family has been involved in wine for four generations. At a time when the world only thought of Rioja wines when it came to Spanish wine, he set out to cultivate old, abandoned vineyards in previously unknown regions. In doing so, Bodegas Volver has managed not only to revive old, native grape varieties but also to reposition Spanish quality wines.

The Region

Castile, the region of windmills, produces half of Spain's wine yield. The vast, flat southern half of the great central Spanish plateau is a land of extremes: at 500 to 700 meters above sea level, it is extremely hot and dry in summer. While the landscape is green in spring, it turns ochre-yellow in summer, and most riverbeds dry up. The prevailing, typically reddish-brown, barren soil is sandy, calcareous, or clayey. Thanks to its ability to store scarce water, viticulture is possible at all. A new generation of modern winemakers primarily cultivates the white Airén grape variety here and focuses on clean, authentic, and mostly organic production.
