About Bodegas Volver

The Bodegas Volver project was founded in 2004 by visionary Rafael Cañizares, a trained oenologist and winemaker whose family has been connected to wine for four generations. At a time when the world only thought of Rioja wines when it came to Spanish wine, he set out to cultivate old, abandoned vineyards in previously unknown wine-growing regions. In doing so, Bodegas Volver has succeeded not only in reviving old, indigenous grape varieties but also in repositioning quality Spanish wines.

The region

Archaeological findings prove that vines were cultivated in the Valencia region as early as prehistoric times. Today, Spain's largest port city lends its name to the autonomous region and one of the five DO areas in the Levant. In the DO Valencia, white wine is produced for the most part on brown, calcareous soils, primarily from the late-ripening Merseguera grape; fruity, pleasantly drinkable red wines are produced from well-ripened Monastrell and Garnacha. The diverse landscape structures of the Valencia area are also reflected in the climatic conditions: humid, hot Mediterranean climate near the coast, and drier, less hot conditions in the mountain regions inland.
