E. Guigal Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc Saintes Pierres de Nalys 2018 white wine – Balanced and full-bodied, this light yellow wine offers delicate aromas of peach, quince, pear and floral violet notes. About E. Guigal

Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery founded by his grandfather Etienne in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with their carved-out terraces, and the poor soils, from which the vines draw water from depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals make the most of their grapes and terroir, reflected in the top quality and small production volumes. The wines are aged in barriques from the estate’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command premium prices. It is no wonder, then, that Guigal is the winery with the most wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker.

The region

The Rhône is of great importance for winegrowing. It encompasses four wine regions that differ considerably in climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area in the middle around the tributary Drôme, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. On steep slopes with granite-rich soils, almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown here; the more prestigious wine regions of Hermitage and Côte Rotie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most wines there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
