About E. Guigal
Philippe Guigal, a highly talented oenologist, runs the winery in Ampuis in France’s Rhône Valley, founded by his grandfather Etienne. Everything here is exceptional: the location on steep slopes with terraces carved into them, and the poor soils, which the vines draw water from at depths of up to 15 metres. The Guigals bring out the best in their grapes and terroir, reflected in the top quality and small quantities. The wines are aged in barriques made in the estate’s own cooperage, and these magnificent wines command premium prices. It is no wonder, then, that the Guigal winery has produced more wines awarded 100 points by Robert Parker than any other.
The region
The Rhône is of great importance for winegrowing. It connects four wine regions that differ greatly in terms of climate, topography and grape varieties: the northern and southern Rhône, the area around the tributary Drôme in the middle, and the area east of the southern Rhône. The north has a continental climate with harsh winters and hot summers. Almost exclusively Syrah—the only permitted red grape variety—and the white Viognier are grown on steep slopes with granite-rich soils; the prestigious wine regions of Hermitage and Côte Rotie are located here. The south, facing the sea, benefits from a Mediterranean climate and sandy, rocky soils. Most wines there are blends of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Mourvèdre, which are also used in the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation.
