About Egomei

Egomei is a place devoted to pure enjoyment. The winery is set amid breathtaking natural surroundings on 120 hectares in the town of Alfaro. It is located in Rioja Oriental (formerly Rioja Baja). The vineyards have been tended with great care since 1975, with the aim from the outset of achieving the highest quality for wines made from Tempranillo and Graciano grapes grown in carefully selected single vineyards. The same high level of expertise is central to winemaking at Egomei. The wine is aged in French Allier oak barrels and small tanks until it achieves the perfect balance and depth.

The region

Rioja, Spain’s leading wine-growing region, is divided into three areas: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja. The region is renowned for its outstanding red wines and vast wineries—the latter because all wines are aged for at least one year in oak barrels and for at least another year in the bottle. After the phylloxera disaster, substantial capital flowed from Basque industry into rebuilding the region and exporting its wines to the USA, which is why the wines have traditionally been aged in American oak barrels. Tempranillo is the predominant red grape grown in Rioja, on a wide variety of soils ranging from sand to alluvial deposits. The climate in Rioja Baja is Mediterranean, with extremely hot, dry summers and mild winters, while the cooler Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa are influenced by the Atlantic.
