About Freixenet
The world’s leading traditional sparkling wine brand («Established 1861») takes its name from the ash groves in the surrounding area: Freixe is Catalan for ash tree. The company’s stated goal is to inspire wine lovers with the brand’s passion and joie de vivre. The beginning of the company’s unprecedented success story was marked by the marriage of Dolores Sala and her great love, Pedro Ferrer Bosch. The two were an unbeatable team: Dolores was ahead of her time in her detailed knowledge of winemaking, and together with Pedro’s keen entrepreneurial instincts, their sparkling wines quickly gained recognition and acclaim. Today, Pedro and Dolores’ children and grandchildren run the family business.
The Region
Catalonia is a renowned region in northeastern Spain. The Catalans are the driving force and the greatest innovators in Spanish winemaking. They were the first to produce sparkling wine in Penedès using the Champagne method—so Cava continues to play an important role here to this day. This vast wine region is home to every microclimate imaginable for winegrowing. Along the coast, the sea brings freshness and humidity, while inland it is rather dry and hot. In addition, mountain ranges with their hills and steep slopes give rise to many exceptional terroirs, especially on limestone and clay soils. These natural conditions, combined with the ingenuity of local winegrowers, produce a wealth of outstanding wines.
