About Il Sestiere

The northern Italian region of Veneto, where the grapes for Il Sestiere ripen, is one of only eight provinces whose sparkling wines may be called Prosecco. This is permitted only if the grapes are both grown and processed there. Dedicated winegrowers carefully tend the grapes as they develop, then craft them with great care into an exceptionally stylish wine.

The Region

Veneto, as it is known in Italian, is one of Italy’s most popular wine regions, thanks in part to the tourist hotspot of Venice, and one of the country’s three largest. Geographically, Veneto is highly diverse: one third is covered by mountain ranges, while the central plains feature extensive rice fields and a long coastline. Its wines are correspondingly varied. Stony, limestone-rich soil covered with red and brown earth provides good growing conditions for the vines. The Alps, whose foothills border the vast region to the north, shield it from harsher northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate. Red grape varieties are grown mainly in the warmer plains along the Adriatic coast; the cooler areas produce excellent white wines, the best known of which is undoubtedly Prosecco.
