The Region

Friuli, in Italy’s far northeast, borders Austria and Slovenia. It is one of Italy’s finest white wine regions, and a growing number of young, up-and-coming winemakers are making a splash abroad with their outstanding wines. For centuries, the influences of three peoples and cultures have come together here: Italian, Germanic and Slavic, with the Celts already growing grapes in the region. The fairly mild climate, shaped by the nearby sea and the protection of the Alps, contributes to abundant harvests. The loose, nutrient-poor soils that cover the former seabed are also responsible for the wines’ mineral freshness. Here, vines can easily send their roots into the soil and absorb many minerals, resulting in high-quality wines.
