The Region

Friuli, in Italy’s far northeast, borders Austria and Slovenia. It is one of Italy’s finest white wine regions, and a growing number of young, up-and-coming winemakers are making a splash abroad with their excellent wines. For centuries, the influences of three peoples and cultures have converged here: Italian, Germanic and Slavic. The Celts were already growing grapes here. The fairly mild climate, shaped by the nearby sea and the protection of the Alps, contributes to abundant harvests. The loose, nutrient-poor soils that cover the former seabed also contribute to the wines’ mineral freshness. The vines can easily send their roots deep into the soil here and absorb many minerals, helping produce high-quality wines.
