The Region

Veneto, known in the local language as Veneto, is one of Italy’s most popular wine regions, thanks in part to the tourist hotspot of Venice—and one of the country’s three largest regions. Geographically, Veneto is extremely diverse: a third of the region is covered by mountain ranges, while its central plain features extensive rice fields and a long coastline. As a result, Veneto’s wines are highly varied. Stony, calcareous soil covered with red and brown earth provides good growing conditions for the vines. The Alps, whose foothills border the vast region to the north, protect it from harsher northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate. Red grape varieties are grown mainly in the warmer plains along the Adriatic coast; the cooler areas produce excellent white wines, the best known of which is undoubtedly Prosecco.
