About Leonardo da Vinci

500 YEARS OF WINE EXPERTISE: for half a millennium, the world has known that Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. Less well known is the fact that Leonardo came from a winemaking family in the Tuscan village of Vinci and that wine was his great passion. Villa Da Vinci, the estate where Leonardo grew up in the 16th century and where his family had been growing vines for 500 years, still exists today, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Inspired by life on the estate, Leonardo applied his genius to studying viticulture and developing new methods to continually improve wine quality. He recorded his findings in letters and sketches. Today, the wines of Cantina Leonardo da Vinci are made according to the traditional Metodo Leonardo® – from grape growing to vinification.

The region

Emilia-Romagna, located in northern central Italy, has gained worldwide fame thanks to its automotive industry: Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and other big names call the region home. But the region, with the university city of Bologna at its centre, is also passionately devoted to the pleasures of the table – high-quality products such as Parmesan, balsamic vinegar and Parma ham win the hearts of gourmets from here. The same goes for the region’s varied, fine wines: fruity, fresh and light whites made from Malvasia and Trebbiano, and full-bodied, intense reds made predominantly from Barbera and Sangiovese grapes.
