About Leonardo da Vinci
500 YEARS OF WINE-MAKING EXPERTISE: For half a millennium, the world has known that Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. Less well known is the fact that Leonardo came from a family of winegrowers in the Tuscan village of Vinci and that wine was his great passion. Villa Da Vinci, the estate where Leonardo grew up in the 16th century and where his family had been growing vines for 500 years, still exists today, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Inspired by life on the estate, Leonardo also applied his genius to researching viticulture and developing new methods to continually improve the quality of wines. He recorded his findings in letters and sketches. Today, Cantina Leonardo da Vinci wines are produced according to the traditional Metodo Leonardo® – from vineyard cultivation through to vinification.
The region
Emilia-Romagna, located in northern central Italy, has gained worldwide renown thanks to its automotive industry: Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and other big names are based here. But the region, with the university city of Bologna at its heart, is also passionately devoted to the pleasures of the table. High-quality products such as Parmesan, balsamic vinegar and Parma ham have won the hearts of gourmets far and wide. The region also produces an array of fine wines: fruity, fresh and light whites made from Malvasia and Trebbiano grapes, and rich, intense reds, primarily from Barbera and Sangiovese grapes.
