About Leonardo da Vinci

500 YEARS OF WINE EXPERTISE: for half a millennium, the world has known that Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. Less well known is the fact that Leonardo came from a family of winegrowers in the Tuscan village of Vinci and that wine was his great passion. Villa Da Vinci, the estate where Leonardo grew up in the 16th century and where his family was already growing vines 500 years ago, still exists today, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Inspired by life on the estate, Leonardo also applied his genius to the study of viticulture and the development of new methods for continuously improving wine quality. He recorded his findings in letters and sketches. Today, the wines of Cantina Leonardo da Vinci are produced according to the time-honoured Metodo Leonardo® – from vine growing through to vinification.

The Region

The central Italian region of Abruzzo, with its long Adriatic coastline, is home to a variety of distinctive grape varieties. Around two-thirds of Abruzzo is mountainous, while one-third is hilly. Vines are also planted at elevations of up to 600 m above sea level, at the foot of the mountain massif, in limestone, clay, sand and gravel soils. The climate in this part of Italy is marked by significant temperature variations—not only between the seasons, but especially in the summer months between day and night. In general, however, conditions are warm during the ripening period, and the vineyards are well situated, sloping down towards the sea so that the grapes benefit fully from the summer warmth and reflected sunlight. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is produced to high quality standards in two distinct styles: a young, fresh style with firm fruit, and an intense, full-bodied, powerful style.
