About Leonardo da Vinci

500 YEARS OF WINE EXPERTISE: For half a millennium, the world has known that Leonardo da Vinci was a brilliant inventor and artist. Less well known is the fact that Leonardo came from a winemaking family in the Tuscan village of Vinci and that wine was his great passion. Villa Da Vinci, the estate where Leonardo grew up in the 16th century and where his family had been growing vines for 500 years, still exists today, surrounded by beautiful vineyards. Shaped by life on the estate, Leonardo also applied his genius to studying viticulture and developing new methods to continuously improve the quality of wine. He recorded his findings in letters and sketches. Today, the wines of Cantina Leonardo da Vinci are produced according to the traditional Metodo Leonardo®—from vine growing to vinification.

The Region

Alongside Piedmont, Tuscany is probably Italy’s most famous wine-growing region. The Etruscans grew vines there long before the Romans, making it one of Europe’s oldest wine-growing regions. In Tuscany, people speak mainly—and with justifiable pride—of the world-famous Chianti and Brunello. In fact, however, Tuscany is Italy’s leading producer of premium wines. Blessed with abundant sunshine, cooled by sometimes powerful sea breezes and still receiving sufficient rainfall, Tuscan vines thrive on poor limestone, clay and sandstone soils and various combinations thereof, producing outstanding wines that wine lovers around the world rave about.
