The Region

In the south of France, bordering the Rhône Valley geographically, the country’s largest wine region, Languedoc, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline, with its vineyards and picturesque old stone houses. The climate is characterised by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here—mostly in limestone soils—are robust and hardy due to the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive cultivation is a major agricultural activity here; the olives also grow without artificial irrigation. Languedoc is an exceptionally colourful region: the Mediterranean flair can be felt everywhere—in the traditional earthenware, the airy fabrics and the light, delicious dishes.
