The region

In the south of France, adjoining the Rhône Valley geographically, the country’s largest wine-growing region, Languedoc, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline, with its vineyards and picturesque old stone houses. The climate is characterised by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here—mostly on limestone soils—are robust and strong due to the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive growing also dominates local agriculture; the olives, too, thrive without artificial irrigation. Languedoc is an exceptionally colourful region: the Mediterranean flair is palpable everywhere—in the traditional earthenware, the airy fabrics and the light, delicious dishes.
