The region

In the south of France, adjoining the Rhône Valley geographically, the country’s largest wine region, Languedoc, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline, with its vineyards and picturesque old stone houses. The climate is characterised by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here, mostly in limestone soils, are robust and hardy because of the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive growing is the dominant agricultural activity; the olives also flourish without artificial irrigation. Languedoc is an exceptionally colourful region: the Mediterranean atmosphere is palpable everywhere, in the typical earthenware, airy fabrics and light, delicious dishes.
