The region

In the south of France, geographically adjoining the Rhône Valley, Languedoc, the country’s largest wine region, stretches along the Mediterranean coastline, with its vineyards and picturesque old stone houses. The climate is marked by abundant sunshine, mild winters and hot summers. The vines that thrive here—mostly on limestone soils—are robust and hardy due to the region’s dry conditions. Alongside viticulture, olive growing is also a dominant agricultural activity here; the olives, too, thrive without artificial irrigation. Languedoc is a particularly colourful region: the Mediterranean flair is palpable everywhere—in the traditional earthenware, the airy fabrics and the light, delicious dishes.
