About Montes

As a lucky charm, a statue of a guardian angel stands in every Montes wine cellar. It has accompanied top winemaker Aurelio Montes, an outstanding personality, since the company's founding and holds a protective hand over these wonderful wines. Not only for this reason, but also thanks to his instinct for new terroirs and top-class wines, Aurelio Montes has made it onto the international wine map. He discovered Chile's potential and produces wines of the highest quality. Today, the Montes winery includes vineyards in Apalta, Marchigüe, and the cooler Zapallar. It is family-owned; at the helm is, of course, Aurelio Montes, supported by his son, Aurelio Montes Jr.

The Region

In terms of wine volume, the Central Valley is one of the most important and largest wine-growing regions in South America. It extends from the coastal plains of western Colchagua to the Andean foothills of Puente Alto and is divided into the sub-regions of Colchagua and Cachapoal. Over its 400-kilometer length, it offers a great climatic diversity and very different soils, resulting in an enormous range of wines, from traditional Chilean wines to trendy Bordeaux-style wines. In any case, Chile's star grape, Carmenere, plays the leading role here. However, in the cooler regions, winemakers are increasingly experimenting with grape varieties such as Viognier, Riesling, and even Gewürztraminer.
