The Region

In terms of wine volume, the Central Valley is one of the most important and largest wine-growing regions in South America. It extends from the coastal plains of western Colchagua to the foothills of the Andes in Puente Alto and is divided into the sub-regions of Colchagua and Cachapoal. Spanning 400 kilometers in length, it offers great climatic diversity and highly varied soils, resulting in an enormous range of wines, from traditional Chilean styles to fashionable Bordeaux-style wines. In any case, Chile's star grape, Carmenere, plays the leading role here. However, in the cooler regions, winemakers are increasingly experimenting with grape varieties such as Viognier, Riesling, and even Gewürztraminer.
