The Region

Veneto, known in the local language as Veneto, is one of Italy's most popular wine regions with its tourist hub Venice – and one of the three largest in the country. Geographically, Veneto is extremely diverse: on the one hand, a third of it is covered by mountain ranges, while on the other hand, the region's central plain features extensive rice fields and a large stretch of coastline. Accordingly, the wines of Veneto are exceptionally varied. Stony and calcareous soil covered with red and brown earth provides the vines with good growing conditions, while the Alps, whose foothills border the extensive area to the north, protect the region from harsher Northern European weather and ensure a balanced climate. In the warmer plains along the Adriatic coast, red grape varieties are predominantly grown; excellent white wines come from the cooler zones, the most famous of which is undoubtedly Prosecco.
