The Region

Sicily, home to Italy's largest wine-growing area, lies at the tip of the Italian boot; the climate – intense summer heat and low rainfall, with a distinctly southern African influence – and the geography – mountainous terrain with poor soils – make the island ideal for viticulture. It makes excellent use of nature's advantages: hillside vineyards with excellent exposure, abundant sunlight, favourable altitudes with significant temperature differences between day and night, and a wide range of distinctive indigenous grape varieties. The soils vary depending on the island's subregion: in the west, very poor volcanic soils predominate. It is no wonder, then, that the most sought-after vineyards for intense, deep, dark and fruity wines are located on the slopes of Mount Etna. In other regions, sandy soils with high iron content can be found. Combined with an underlying layer of limestone, they impart fresh mineral notes to the wines.
